*Leading Rusher: Ezekiel Elliott (+250)
*Betting Value: David Johnson (+1400) and Saquon Barkley (+1200)
*Longshot: Alvin Kamara (+4000)

One of the most exciting statistical competitions during the NFL regular season is the battle for the league’s rushing title. Each year, the title typically ends up being claimed by one of the best backs in the league, if not the best. Last year was a surprise as rookie running back Kareem Hunt came out of nowhere to win the title. However, he did so with the help of a few other coaches and running backs.
This year, with players being healthy and off suspension, I expect the competition to be fierce. There’s easily four or five backs that can win this competition and I expect it to come down to the final week once again. So, who should you bet on? I’ll answer that question and make my prediction down below:2017 Top 10 Leading Rushers
As mentioned, rookie RB Kareem Hunt led the NFL in rushing last season. However, despite statistically winning the rushing title, he did have a lot of help the last week of the season. For starters, Hunt entered the final week down by 12 yards to Todd Gurley. Hunt rushed for one attempt in the final game and totaled 35 rushing yards, which put him in the lead.
Gurley, who averaged 87 rushing yards per game, compared to Hunt’s 82.9 ypg, didn’t even play the final game of the season. Additionally, Le’Veon Bell, who finished 36 yards behind Hunt and averaged 86.1 ypg on the ground, didn’t play the final week of the 2017 season either. Both Bell and Gurley were rested by their head coaches for the playoffs. The following running backs are considered the odds on favorite to lead the league in rushing for the 2018 NFL regular season:Ezekiel Elliot (+250)
It’s hard not to like Elliot to win the rushing title and this NFL prop bet. Last year, Elliott missed 6 games due to suspension and still finished 10th in the league in rushing yards. He averaged 98.3 rushing yards per game in 2017, which was down from his rookie year in 2016. That season, Elliott took the rushing title with 1,631 yards and an average of 108.7 rushing yards per game.Nfl Rushing Leaders
Elliott will be called on to carry the ball at least 25 times a game and probably 2-3 screen passes per game. The Cowboys passing attack isn’t expected to be great with Jason Witten and Dez Bryant gone. Dak Prescott will have to try and find a new security blanket and a new number one receiver. This bodes well for Elliott as he will be called upon to move the chains and keep the defenses honest.Nfl Rushing Titles By YearTodd Gurley II (+350)
He might not have led the league in rushing last year, but Todd Gurley led the league in total yards from scrimmage with 2,093 yards. In addition to his 1,305 rushing yards, Gurley also had 788 receiving yards on 64 receptions, and 19 total touchdowns. In response to his great season, the Los Angeles Rams rewarded Gurley with a 4-year, $60 million dollar contract on July 24th.
This year, Gurley is expected to once again lead his team back to the playoffs. The Rams are loaded on defense and still just as dangerous on offense. Despite losing Sammy Watkins, they gained Brandin Cooks in a trade from the New England Patriots. They also have a solid, young quarterback in Jared Goff who will be in this system for a second year. I expect him to take it up a notch as well. Look for the Rams to be one of the top offenses in the league this season and for Gurley to be competing not only for the rushing title, but also the NFL MVP award.Le’Veon Bell (+400)
For the second straight season, Bell will be playing this year under the franchise tag. Despite it paying roughly $14.5 million this season, Le’Veon is not happy with the Steelers lack of financial compensation over the long term and his agent believes that this will be Bell’s last season with the team. There are also some rumors of Bell possibly holding out into the regular season. Because of this contractual issue, I find it hard to believe that Bell will lead the league in rushing despite his teammates thinking he will have his best year yet.
Last season, Bell finished with 1,291 rushing yards, 655 receiving yards on 85 receptions, and 11 total touchdowns. He was definitely one of the best running backs in the league once he got over his slow start to the 2017 season.
Personally, I think Bell is too high on the list and should be dropped down some considering the contractual issues. However, with Gurley getting a big fat contract, you can expect Bell to demand at least $15 million per year next offseason.Leonard Fournette (+800)
The 2017 season was Fournette’s rookie year and it was a stellar one. The Jaguars running back finished 8th in the league with 1,040 rushing yards and added another 302 receiving yards. Fournette did this in 13 games as he averaged 80 rushing yards per game and 23 receiving yards per game.
With a full year under his belt, Fournette is expected to take a step forward in his sophomore year and surpass the 1,000 yard mark again. I expect Leonard to get more touches this year as the Jaguars have parted ways with Chris Ivory who rushed the ball 112 times last year. Look for Fournette to get at least 300 rushing attempts this year compared to his 268 from last year. If that happens then Fournette would should surpass at least 1,200 rushing yards this year, provided he doesn’t miss any games due to injury.Dalvin Cook (+1200)
This young back is the wild card in my opinion. Before injuring his knee, rookie running back Dalvin Cook was tearing it up. In 4 games, he had 354 yards on the ground for an average of 88.5 yards per game. With Kirk Cousins signing a massive guaranteed contract with the Vikings this offseason, Minnesota’s passing game will be a legitimate threat. This will soften up defenses more, which should allow Cook to have extra room to run the ball.
By all accounts, Cook is ready, healthy and poised for a big year in Minnesota. Only Gurley and Bell, above Cook on this list, have legitimate passing attacks comparable to or better than the Vikings. The one area of concern for the sophomore back is that he will have Latavius Murray taking some carries from him and potential goal line attempts. Nevertheless, Cook is a good bet to get over 1,200 yards this year and push Elliott and Gurley for the rushing title.Betting Value for League Rushing Title
There are a few running backs who provide bettors with some great value. I’ve narrowed that list down to my top two best value bets:Saquon Barkley (+1200)
Can Barkley make it 3 straight years that a rookie running back leads the league in rushing? As a huge fan of his, and as a former Penn State student, I would love nothing more than to see this happen. In 2016, rookie Ezekiel Elliott won the rushing title and rookie RB Kareem Hunt won it last year.
Barkley certainly has the skills to lead the league in rushing and he also has a great playing situation to do so. The only other running back with any credible chance of taking carries from Saquon is the former Carolina Panthers starter Jonathan Stewart. However, by all accounts, Stewart isn’t looking great this offseason with the Giants.
Another reason why Barkley will do well this year is the offensive system he will be in. Pat Shurmur has been an effective coordinator in this league and he will now be the head man for the Giants this year. Additionally, the team brought in Mike Shula to be the offensive coordinator, but Shurmur will call the plays. Shula had plenty of success in Carolina over the last 5 years as they typically finished around the middle of the pack in total offense. However, the Panthers always had a strong running game and that suits Barkley.
Lastly, one more reason why Saquon could lead the league in rushing is due to the passing weapons that this offense has like Odell Beckham Jr. who will command double teams and really open up the field. The Giants also have veteran QB Eli Manning to lead the charge and provide the offense with the poise that it needs.
Bottom line, Barkley is in the ideal situation for a rookie running back and he has the skills to really explode during his first season in the NFL.David Johnson (+1400)
As of this publication, David Johnson was not listed at BetOnline and several other sportsbooks. However, there were a few other lesser known oddsmakers that had him listed at +1400.
David Johnson is returning from a wrist injury that knocked him out for the final 15 games of the 2017 season. In his one game played, Johnson totaled 23 rushing yards and 67 receiving yards before dislocating his wrist in the 3rd quarter against the Detroit Lions. Johnson was expected to have a big season after his breakout performance in 2016 where he finished with 1,239 rushing yards, 879 receiving yards, and 20 total touchdowns.
There was a bit of frustration from Johnson over his contract this offseason, which led him to hold out of all practices, OTAs and workouts until training camp. DJ is in the final year of his rookie contract and only making just under $2 million, which is far less than anyone else in this top 10 list of odds on favorite to win the 2018 rushing title except for Hunt.
With Gurley setting the running back market at roughly $15 million per year, you can expect both Le’Veon Bell and David Johnson to demand similar numbers. Johnson is looking to be the first player since Roger Craig in 1985 to rush for over 1,000 yards and get over 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. With a new quarterback and some tweaks to the offensive scheme, you can expect Johnson to get a full workload in 2018.2018 NFL Rushing Title Longshot
Alvin Kamara at +4000 odds is my longshot this year for several reasons. In 2017, Kamara was a rookie running back with little expectations. Not only did he exceed the expectations, he put in a pro bowl type performance for the year as a backup running back with 728 rushing yards, 826 receiving yards, and 13 total touchdowns. Kamara’s 2017 campaign earned him the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
This year, Saints starting running back Mark Ingram will miss the first 4 games of the season due to a suspension for violating the performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) policy. This opens the door for Kamara to get off to a fast start. In 2017, Kamara averaged 6.1 rushing yards per attempt. That was the best out of all the running backs in the league last year. If he starts putting up monster numbers during the first month of the season, I can see the Saints continuing with him as the starter and working Ingram into the mix when he comes back.
The Saints brought in veteran RBs Shane Vereen and Terrance West to help carry the load during the first month of the season while Ingram is out. There’s no guarantee that both men will stay on the roster when Ingram comes back, but they do provide some veteran experience to an offense that’s expected to be in the top 5 again this year. With that in mind, I like these odds for Kamara and I think he’s worth a small wager.2018 NFL Regular Season Leading Rusher Final Thoughts
The 2018 NFL regular season is going to be an exciting one for this competition. There are a handful of legitimate options as to who will win the league’s rushing title. Elliott, Gurley, Bell, and Johnson have all proven to be workhorses for their teams in the past. Cook, Fournette, and Barkley have the potential to be franchise players for years to come. And, Kamara can do it all as a passer, running back and even a return man.
But, since I can only pick one back, I am going with Ezekiel Elliott. Since Zeke has come into the league, the Dallas Cowboys have finished second in the league for rushing yards the last two years. In 2016, they finished with 2,396 total rushing yards for an average of 149.8 ypg. In 2017, they finished with 2,170 total rushing yards for an average of 135.6 ypg. They missed out leading the league in rushing last year by 92 yards. I believe they would’ve easily nailed that if Elliott didn’t get suspended for 6 games.
Keep in mind, Elliott averaged 98.3 ypg in 2017 and 108.7 ypg in 2016 when he played a full season. If Elliott had played in all 16 games last year, based on his average, he would’ve finished with over 1,570 rushing yards. That would’ve easily won his the league’s rushing title. Even if his numbers dipped some or he didn’t play in the final game of the year just like Bell and Gurley, Zeke still would’ve finished with roughly 1,480 rushing yards and he would’ve beat out Bell and Gurley if they played and hit their game averages.
With Zeke back, the Cowboys will pound the pigskin. I expect them to be in the top 5 for rushing yards this year and contend for the top spot as they have the last two seasons.
I will say to watch out for Gurley and Johnson this year. I do believe they both have the potential for big years. Both of these backs, and Bell, are the highest ranked running backs for odds on favorite to win the NFL MVP award in 2018 according to BetOnline. However, there’s still at least 12-15 quarterbacks ahead of them on this list.Top 10 Single Season Rushing Yard Leaders
